Screenshots, old fashioned postcards, religious illustrations, figurines, comics, society portraits - slices of mnemonic device, artifacts of material and virtual culture - make up my archive. Embedded in vibrating indexes, flickering figures and adhesive timestamps, the fragments from a destabilized past are reflecting my reality. Instead of reproducing the images, I try to reinvent the fetishistic gazes that once cast upon them: sometimes anachronistic, always a little ironic.

To unzip the archival practice is to work through concealed layers of minds and desires with tentative eyes of a private detective. Indebted to the visual culture of the past and present, my works encompass different times and mentalities, which map out diverse, most of the time contradictory, views on contemporary issues and crack open the spaces for further speculation.

Accumulating the history of the source materials themselves, my works respond not only in two-dimensional form, but also writhe into three-dimensional illusions like the altars in 18th century Rococo style or the impressive faux terrains of 19th century panorama.

In my practice, I prefer to playfully experiment with the above-mentioned fragmentary imageries. By fortifying or removing certain components, I attempt to grasp a momentary image from fluid identities of the painting. Inhabiting different textures, some figures would sink to the background, some would float on the canvas surface. Their movements contrast with each other in childlike colors and further conjure up a innocent violence, or rather, a gleam of uncanny reminiscence: it almost seems to be kitsch, but it’s not; it almost seems to be dirty, but it’s not; it almost seems to be violent, but it’s not. Maybe, “almost” is what it’s all about.
